A GREEN SYCAMORE, A GROVE
This audio album is an attempt to explore the unique traditional music legacy of Polatsak region, the very heart of ancient Kryvichy land.
Inspired by the authentic music, we decided to demonstrate sounds and emotions that it evokes and, in such a way, to create a vivid musical image of these lands.
The album contains songs and instrumental compositions that used to be
performed in Polatsak region and were part of the yearly calendar. Most of the songs are from Polatsak district (2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 14, 15, 16, and 18) and from nearby districts of Vushachy (8, 10) and Hlybokaye (12). Some of the songs (2, 7, and 18) were recorded by Hanna Lutava from her grandmother, Alimpiyada Mikhaylauna Shcharbakova from Shastova village, Polatsak district. Two of them are performed by Hanna Lutava solo.
Belarusian Padzvinnie stands out from other historical-ethnographic regions for its prevailing manner of monophonic singing. Hence, all the songs of the album are performed in a monophonic way. Another particular feature of Polatsak region is antiphonal manner of singing Midsummer Night’s songs. You can hear an example of antiphonal singing on track 5. Some of the songs have musical accompaniment (3, 12, 14, and 16). Instrumental music is performed by members of the folk band “Varhan”: Kastus Putronak (harmonic, Jew’s harp), Antanina Yemialyanchyk (violin), Yana Khramtsova (tambourine).
Musical portrait of Polatsak region cannot be complete without such emblematic instruments as the bagpipe and the hurdy-gurdy. The album features bagpipe passages (9, 17) and a hurdy-gurdy passage (14), performed by Alies Los, a famous musician, ethnographer and artist. The instrumental passages are enriched with the dulcimer parties performed by Aliesia Sivokhina (4; 6; 13).
There are elements of reconstruction in the album. You are going to hear the sound of the Jew’s harp, an ancient instrument, popular on Belarusian lands since the XII century, according to the archeological findings and folklore texts. Some of the Jew’s harps were found on the territory of ancient Polatsak during archeological excavation works by a young archeologist Aliaksiey Kots, who is also a member of the band “Varhan” (“Varhan” is the Belarusian word for “Jew’s harp”). We look upon this instrument as some kind of a “portal” that allows us to travel in time and space and to experience the acoustic environment of the past centuries.

“ЗЯЛЁН ЯВАР, ДУБРОВА” - Музыка Полаччыны ад палачан
Полацкі фальклорны гурт “Варган” прэзентуе дэбютны альбом з музыкай роднай зямлі. У альбом увайшлі песні і інструментальныя кампазіцыі, якія некалі гучалі на тэрыторыі Полаччыны на працягу гадавога каляндарнага кола. Кружэлка прызначана для аматараў этнічнай музыкі і беларускага фальклору.
“Зялён явар, дуброва. Музыка Полаччыны” - першы студыйны альбом фальклорнага гурта “Варган”. Ён змяшчае 18 трэкаў, сярод якіх песні, танцы і нават “цярэшкі”. У якасці бонуса – запіс купальскай песні ад аўтэнтычнай спявачкі Алімпіяды Міхайлаўны Шчарбаковай з вёскі Шастова Полацкага раёна.
У выкананні “варганцаў” можна пачуць абрадавыя песні, прымеркаваныя да знакавых гадавых святаў, а таксама лірычныя – жаночыя ды мужчынскія. Раней песня ішла з чалавекам праз усё жыццё. Песняй сустракалі пры нараджэнні, песня дапамагала ў цяжкай працы і ў нялёгкіх жыццёвых абставінах. На кожным свяце гучалі асобныя песні, унікальныя ў кожным рэгіёне і нават вёсцы. Спявалі ў хаце, ў полі, ў дарозе.
Вясковы свет не быў глухім і шэрым захалусцем, як і людзі не былі сумнымі і заморанымі рабацягамі. Бо не працай адзінай жыў чалавек. Нашыя продкі ўмелі і любілі весяліцца. Як доказ – інструментальная частка альбома, што пераносіць слухача на сапраўдную вясковую вечарыну з танцамі. Гармонік ды скрыпка, цымбалы ды бубен, дуда ды колавая ліра і канешне ж – варган. Так, сапраўды, на дыску можна пачуць гукі гэтага старажытнага інструмента. І гэта не нейкія фантастычныя разважанні на тэму. Мала хто ведае, але ў Полацку гралі на варганах з ранняга сярэднявечча. Гэта пацвярджаюць археалагічныя знаходкі. Ды і назву гурт абраў сабе не выпадкова. Варган для спевакоў сімвалізуе своеасаблівы “партал”, які дазваляе вандраваць у прасторы і часе і паглыбляцца ў гукавую стыхію мінулых стагоддзяў.
У стварэнні інструментальнай часткі альбома прымалі ўдзел запрошаныя музыкі – вядомы майстар, музыка і мастак Алесь Лось (дуда, колавая ліра), а таксама Алеся Сівохіна (цымбалы).
Гучанне альбома стварае атмасферу, набліжаную да палявога запісу ў час свята, вечарынкі, ігрышча. Частка кампазіцый запісвалася ў Полацку (запіс, звядзенне – Алесь Лось), частка – у Мінску (запіс, звядзенне, мастэрынг – Арцём Петрашкевіч і Валерый Бяляеў).
