about

Belarusian Men Sing

Unique recordings of the Belarusian men singing (in bands and solo) comprise the first album of TRADYCYJA series. The songs of the album, mostly from Paliessie villages, were recorded by the famous Belarusian ethno-musicologists in the 1970-s - 1980-s.

The CD has been issued in the form of a small hardcover book with a disk in an envelope. The book contains the lyrics and notes of the songs, photos, and the information about the singers and the bands. There is an English translation of the description and biography data of the performers. Tatsiana Piesniakievich selected the recordings, Aliaksiei Hlushko digitized the material, Iryna Maziuk made the compilation and the transcript, Vasilisa Palanina made the CD cover design, and Artsiom Pietrashkievich did the mastering.
TRADYCYJA project was founded by Siarzhuk Douhushau, a musician and an ethnographer, to promote the Belarusian traditional music. Besides releasing CDs, the project involves conducting concerts of authentic bands, master classes, singing workshops and ethnographic expeditions.
Male singing tradition is one of the most interesting phenomena of the Belarusian culture. Still, we know very little about it. Many books with lyrics have been published, but they are “silent” for it is the harmony of many voices, quality of the voices and the ancient melodies that give life to the songs.
The CD presents only a small part of the tradition that could be preserved for the next generation, should the conditions for our culture be more favorable. Perhaps, every village had its own masters of singing. People sang on holidays, at the family get-together, at the weddings, on the fields, in the woods, when travelling... While women mostly sang songs of the calendar and family rituals, men had their own repertoire – songs for haymaking, drinking, cherishing youth, as well as humorous, social, lyric and military songs. They sang not to impress the audience but to express their feelings and strengthen their spirit.
The CD begins with the songs of men-only band from Hlushkavichy village, Lielchytsy district, recorded by Zinaida Mazheika in 1968 and 1977. The album also offers songs from Toniezh village of the same district, recorded by Zinaida Mazheika in 1979. She discovered the self-taught master of singing from Paliessie Stsiapan Dubieika. The collection comprises songs of men-only bands from Haurulchytsy village, Salihorsk district, and from Mokhau village, Loyeu district.
The CD also offers songs performed solo by Ryhor Maretski and Fiodar Klimchuk. Ryhor Maretski, from Pirahi village, Dubrouna district, recorded an Easter song he used to sing during an Easter singing round in his village. Fiodar Klimchuk is a famous Belarusian researcher, linguist and dialectologist. He was born in Simanavichy village, Drahichyn district, and turned out to become a unique specialist in the folklore of this region of Paliessie. He knows and sings almost 1000 songs, both old and new ones.
